Choosing The Right Space

Having your RV in the right space is going to be one of the most important choices you can make. Most folks don’t have a full sized Class A garage on the side of their house, so you may have to shop around storage areas. Try and find a flat space, preferably with some cover. Some other things you’ll need to keep an eye out for when you’re picking your location are trees and weeds, both of which will happily leave a sticky stubborn layer of pollen on your RV.

Clean it Out

With your storage space picked out, clean out the entire motorhome. Go top to bottom on the outside (ambitious RVers may put a layer of wax on) and front to back on the inside, cleaning everything out. Make sure you vacuum, remove any food or other perishables from the inside. If you have any battery operated tools like flashlights, make sure to pull the batteries out. Clothes should be removed for the most part, as they can make a tempting target for nesting rodents. After you’ve got your RV cleaned, you’ll want to consider using an RV cover. This will keep any windborne dust off, as well as help prevent sun damage. If you choose to protect your RV with a cover should be breathable so moisture doesn’t get trapped inside.

Chock your Tires

To help with stability, chock your RVs tires. This doesn’t cost much, and helps to protect your RV from unexpected rolling.

Turn Everything Off

Invest in a trickle charger for your battery and remove the battery for winter storage. If you have a garage or another place for weatherproof storage store your battery there to prevent corrosion and to keep the charge up through the winter.

Your liquid propane appliances need to be shut off. You should also make sure the breaker switch for your water heater is off to prevent it from kicking on unfilled when you pull your RV out of storage. The smell of propane will draw ants and other pests, so cover your outside vents to help keep some of the butgs at bay. While you’re looking around your RV, keep an eye out for wear and make a checklist of fixes you can make later.

Keep Pests Out

Obviously if you’re worried about rodents, get the food out of your RV. The number one draw for pests will be the promise of a meal, so remove the bait. If you’re still worried about pest intrusion, then plug any holes tightly with a rag to prevent physical ingress.
