Motorhomes, Destination Trailers, and the One That’s Right for You
Finding the perfect RV can be a big challenge, especially when you’re looking for more than just a handful of weekend camping trips throughout the year. The more time you spend in your RV, the more important those interior features are going to be. That’s why some RV groups are specifically built for long-term and full-time RVing, including motorhomes and destination trailers.
No matter what you choose, you’ll get lots of great amenities and excellent performance perks, but there are a couple of key differences between these options, which is why Camp Site RV Inc. has provided a guide to choosing the model that’s right for you and your family. Read through some of the info below and then stop by our location in Cresco, Iowa, to start searching. We welcome all those from Cedar Falls, as well as those from Rochester, Minnesota, and La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Knowing the Difference
First, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page. After all, the RV market is vast and it can be difficult to tell what you’re looking at.
Motorhomes
Motorhomes are the only drivable RVs on the market. Sometimes called motor coaches, these RVs come with their own engine, fuel source, and driver’s seat. This removes the need for a tow vehicle, although you might find yourself wanting to bring along a second, commuter vehicle anyway, to make it easier to travel from town to town when you’ve parked the RV.
Motorhomes are further broken down into subcategories, known as classes. Generally speaking, class size, from smallest to largest, starts at Class B motorhomes, often built for one or two people. It then moves up to Class C motorhomes, which are bigger and a great affordable option for families. And finally, there are Class A motorhomes, which are often the largest and most commonly used by full-time travelers.
The classes also generally up the luxury factor as you move up in size, which is important to note when looking for that extra special RV.
Destination Trailers
Destination trailers can be as large as some of the biggest motorhomes, if not bigger, but they’re towable RVs. You’ll need a tow vehicle big enough to pull them around, but it is possible to transport them. Unlike other towable RVs, destination trailers are designed to be bigger and more luxurious, closer to what you’d expect from a stationary home.
You might find features like a washer and dryer hookup, larger living areas, a table and chairs, and even a loft, all of which are less common in your standard RV. This is because destination trailers are designed to be more than just your average camper. They’re designed to be the perfect home away from home. In fact, for some, it becomes a permanent home.
Benefits
Quite simply, both of these options are great for long-term or full-time RVers, but there are perks to each that can tip the scale for you.
Motorhome Benefits
Compared to some of your other options, motorhomes will be the easiest to move. Even some of the largest models are still more mobile than destination trailers. If you want to travel a bit more and park your RV for only a few weeks at a time, the motorhome might be the way to go.
Motorhomes are also some of the longest lasting RVs on the market. While anything that’s built for full-timers is going to last a while, a motorhome also has to be prepared to deal with the additional wear and tear of an engine. That’s why they’re built with sturdier, more durable materials and why you’ll still find models on the road that were built over 20 years ago.
Destination Trailer Benefits
Destination trailers are perfect for those who have fallen in love with a particular city or region, or those who want to take their time in exploring various parts of the country. They’re not quite as easy to transport, but that’s what makes them ideal for long vacations in one spot.
In fact, many buyers use destination trailers as a vacation home, as opposed to buying or renting a stationary home. It’s more affordable, and then you can move the location of your vacation home as it pleases you.
Either way, you’re getting a good RV. It’s all going to boil down to your needs. What kind of camping experience do you want? How many people do you need to accommodate? What’s your budget?
